Declaration of the Member States of OPANAL on the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (26 September 2020)

26/09/2020.- September 26 marks the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, established by Resolution 68/32 of the United Nations General Assembly in 2013. On that date, for six consecutive years, the OPANAL Member States , issue the “Declaration of the Member States of the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean on the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons”.

OPANAL participated in the LXIV session of the IAEA General Conference 

22/09/2020. Ambassador Eric Anderson Machado, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Peru to the IAEA and other International Organizations based in Vienna, in his capacity of the Coordinator of OPANAL in Vienna, delivered a statement on behalf of the Secretary General of the OPANAL, Ambassador Flávio Roberto Bonzanini, at the LXIV General Conference of the IAEA.

OPANAL participated in the seminar on pillar II of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons

03/03/2020. The OPANAL Secretary-General participated in the seminar on pillar II of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in preparation for the 2020 NPT Review Conference, which was organized by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs and held in UN Headquarters in New York, 2-3 March 2020.

OPANAL Celebrated its XXVI General Conference Session

07/11/2019. On 7 November 2019, the XXVI Session of the General Conference of the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL) was held. It was chaired by the Ambassador of Peru in Mexico, Mr. Julio Garro Gálvez.

OPANAL participated in Seminar on Fostering Cooperation and Enhancing Consultation Mechanisms Among the Existing Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones

20/09/2019.–  The Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL) participated in the “International Seminar of Representatives of Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones”, with the purpose of fostering cooperation and enhancing the mechanisms of consultation between them. The event was attended by representatives of the 5 existing nuclear-weapon-free zones –Latin America, Africa, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific– in addition to Mongolia, as a state free of nuclear weapons; as well as officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) and members of civil society.

Communiqué of the Member States of OPANAL on the occasion of the 52nd Anniversary of the Treaty of Tlatelolco and in the year of the 50th Anniversary of the Agency’s operation

14/02/2019.- 14-Feb-2019.- On the occasion of the 52nd Anniversary of the adoption and opening for signature of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (Treaty of Tlatelolco), the 33 Member States of the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL), issued a joint Communiqué in which, inter alia:

Affirm their commitment to contribute to the success of the Fourth Conference of Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones and Mongolia, in 2020, convened on 5 December 2018 by Resolution 73/71 of the United Nations General Assembly, and, in this regard, urge all the Parties and Signatories of the Treaties that establish Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones to participate actively in the preparation of the Fourth Conference, supporting Mongolia, designated coordinator of the Fourth Conference.

Reiterate their commitment to participate constructively in the III Preparatory Committee for the 2020 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, to be held from 29 April to 10 May 2019 in New York.

Stress their concern about the international situation, which, among other aspects, is characterized by continuing programs for the modernization of nuclear arsenals, the possible creation of new types of nuclear weapons delivery systems and the increasing threat of use of nuclear weapons in a context of tensions and armed conflicts and threats of terrorism. This occurs when there still are States possessing nuclear weapons, many of those on alert status.

Summer School on Non-Proliferation and Nuclear Disarmament for diplomats in Latin America and the Caribbean

16/07/2020. The sixth edition of the Summer School on Nuclear Disarmament and Non-proliferation for young diplomats from Latin America and the Caribbean was held from 6 to 17 July 2020, with the participation of over 70 diplomats from 25 countries of the region. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all the activities and presentations were held virtually through a videoconference platform.

53° Anniversary of the Treaty of Tlatelolco

14/02/2020. On 11, 13 and 14 February 2020, the 53º anniversary of the opening for signature of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (Treaty of Tlatelolco) was celebrated.

OPANAL holds the fourth edition of the course on disarmament and non proliferation in Nicaragua

02/10/2019.- The Secretariat of the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean, together with the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Nicaragua, conducted the fourth Course on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in the city of Managua from 24 to 27 September 2019.

OPANAL participated at the LXIII General Debate of the IAEA General Conference

Commemoration of the 52nd Anniversary of the Treaty of Tlatelolco

14-16/02/2019.-On the initiative of the Congress of Mexico City, in collaboration with the Government of Mexico City, the Mayor’s Office of Cuauhtémoc (Mexico City), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico and OPANAL, cultural activities were held in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas, in the Tlatelolco neighborhood, to commemorate the 52nd Anniversary of the Treaty of Tlatelolco. On February 14, a ceremony was held to raise the flags of the 33 Member States of OPANAL in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas. The event was attended by Ambassadors and Representatives of the States of Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as congressmen, authorities of Mexico City and the Mayor’s Office of Cuauhtémoc. At the inauguration of the ceremony, some words were addressed by Congressman Marco Antonio Temístocles Villanueva Ramos, President of the Human Rights Commission of the Congress of Mexico City; Congresswoman Jannete Elizabeth Guerrero Maya, President of the International Affairs Committee of the Mexico City Congress; Mr. Maximiliano Reyes Zúñiga, Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Mr. Néstor Núñez López, Mayor of Cuauhtémoc; Dr. José Alfonso Suárez del Real and Aguilera, Secretary of Culture of the Government of Mexico City; and the Hon. Mr. Mauricio Carvalho Lyrio, Ambassador of Brazil in Mexico and current President of the Council of OPANAL.
