On 6 December 2017, Ambassador Luiz Filipe de Macedo Soares was awarded the Prize Medal by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, for having completed fifty years of public service in the diplomatic career.
Ambassador Macedo Soares is a retired diplomat with extensive experience in the field of disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation. Between 2008 and 2011, he was the Permanent Representative of Brazil to the Conference on Disarmament, based in Geneva.
He has been the Secretary-General of the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL) since his election in 2014 and was reelected by acclamation on February 14, 2017, during the XXV Session of the General Conference of the Agency.
The Prize Medal was instituted by Decree 51.061, of 1961, and is granted by the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil to public servants who have rendered relevant services. It is an official recognition of the country to those who distinguish themselves in their services, bequeathing example of devotion.
