VIII Ordinary Period of Sessions of the General Conference

The VIII Regular Session of the General Conference was held in Kingston, Jamaica, from May 16 to 19, 1983 and was chaired by His Excellency Mr. Lloyd MH Barnett, Representative of the Delegation of Jamaica. The representative of Colombia and the representative of Costa Rica were elected as the two Vice-Presidents of the Conference.

The General Conference had the participation of representatives of fifteen (15) Member States: Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Dominican Republic, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Venezuela. They also participated nine (9) Observer States Linked to the Treaty: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, the People's Republic of China, the United States of America, France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. In addition, they were represented fourteen (14) Observer States: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Spain, Finland, Greece, India, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Pakistan, Poland, Federal Republic of Germany, Holy See; and four (4) international observer organizations: the Organization of American States (OAS), the United Nations (UN), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and IBA

At the Conference, several topics were discussed and several resolutions were approved. Between them:

  • Use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes
  • Measures pending the establishment of a disarmament mechanism in the region
