XXV Extraordinary Session of the General Conference
On Thursday, September 28, 2017 in Mexico City, the XXV Extraordinary Session of the General Conference of OPANAL was held. The General Conference, the highest body of OPANAL, was chaired by Ambassador Luis Javier Campuzano, Director General for the United Nations Organization of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico. For their part, Ambassador Daniel Chuburu, of the Argentine Republic, and Ambassador Arturo Duarte Ortiz, of the Republic of Guatemala, held the two Vice-Presidencies of the Conference.
The General Conference adopted resolution CG/E/Res.01/2017 by which Argentina and Uruguay were elected as new Members of the Agency's Council for the period 2018-2021. Likewise, resolutions were adopted on education for disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation, the adoption of the OPANAL budget for 2018, among others.
During the general debate, the Member States took stock of OPANAL's activities during 2017, including the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Tlatelolco.
The General Conference is the supreme body of OPANAL and, therefore, makes the decisions of greatest importance to the Organization. It is made up of all the Contracting Parties to the Treaty of Tlatelolco, that is, all the 33 States of Latin America and the Caribbean, and holds ordinary meetings every two years, and may also hold extraordinary meetings whenever so provided for in the Treaty of Tlatelolco, or when circumstances so advise in the opinion of the Council.
