Ambassador Luiz Filipe de Macedo Soares, Secretary General of OPANAL, during his speech at the general debate of the II Preparatory Committee of the 2020 NPT Review Conference.

El 2018 Preparatory Committee for the 2020 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) took place from April 23 to May 4, 2018 at the Palace of Nations, the headquarters of the Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. This is the second of three sessions to be held ahead of the 2020 Review Conference.

The Preparatory Committee is responsible for addressing substantive and procedural matters in relation to the NPT and the upcoming Review Conference. The President of the second session is Ambassador Adam Bugajski of Poland.

As decided by the States Parties in 2000, the purpose of the first two sessions of the Preparatory Committee is to consider the principles, objectives and means of promoting the full implementation of the NPT, as well as its universality, and to make recommendations in this regard to the Conference of Exam. To that end, each session must consider specific matters related to the implementation of the Treaty and Decisions 1 and 2, as well as the Middle East Resolution adopted in 1995, and the results of subsequent Review Conferences, including issues affecting implementation. and the purpose of the Treaty.

The third session will be specifically charged with making every effort to produce a consensus report containing recommendations to the Review Conference, taking into account the deliberations and results of its previous sessions.

The NPT entered into force in 1970 and was extended indefinitely in 1995. The Treaty is considered the cornerstone of the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and an essential basis for achieving nuclear disarmament. The NPT was established to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons, to promote nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament, and to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
