The Trilateral Conference 2024 on Nuclear Disarmament Verification in Non-Nuclear Weapon States took place from September 30 to October 1 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event, organized by the NPSGLOBAL Foundation with the support of VERTIC, brought together experts from Africa, Central Asia, and Latin America to share their advancements and ideas regarding nuclear disarmament verification.
During the conference, current projects in the field of nuclear disarmament and their impact on verification efforts were reviewed. The Officer for International Relations, Martha Mariana Mendoza Basulto, has been a part of the Latin American Hub since 2020. OPANAL, as a key organization in promoting a world free of nuclear weapons, actively participated in discussions on how non-nuclear weapon states can transform their expertise in non-proliferation verification into broader capacities for disarmament verification.
OPANAL’s participation in this event underscores its commitment to building capacity in nuclear disarmament verification, as well as its role in fostering regional and international cooperation. The conference also provided a space to share the activities and innovations of the regional research Hubs on nuclear disarmament, established in Latin America, Africa, and Central Asia.
As part of the event, there was also a visit to the headquarters of the Brazilian-Argentine Agency for Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials (ABACC).
