Commemoration of the 55th Anniversary of the opening for signature of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (Treaty of Tlatelolco) was opened for signature on February 14, 1967. 

On this occasion, a commemorative event was held organized by the OPANAL Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, with the presence of Mr. Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón, Secretary of Foreign Relations (SRE) of Mexico, Mrs. Martha Delgado Peralta, Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of the SRE, Dr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), Amb. Flávio Roberto Bonzanini, Secretary General of the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL), delegations of the Member States, of the States Parties to Additional Protocols I and II to the Treaty of Tlatelolco and representatives of civil society.

At the event, which took place on February 14, 2022, at the facilities of the Mexican Foreign Ministry, there were interventions by the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, the Secretary General of OPANAL, the Executive Secretary of the OTPCEN Preparatory Commission and Ambassador Oscar Lorenzo Arnold, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Belize in Mexico, in his capacity as current President of the OPANAL Council, read the release which, like every year, was agreed upon by the 33 Member States of OPANAL.

Additionally, the video messages that, on the occasion of the 55th Anniversary, shared by the Governments of Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Cuba, Guatemala, Colombia, Panama and Peru were projected.

As part of this commemoration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs decorated the emblematic Tlatelolco Building, where its main offices are located, with a monumental banner with the OPANAL logo.
