
On December 6, 2017, Ambassador Luiz Filipe de Macedo Soares received the Award Medal from Ambassador Marcos Galvão, Secretary General of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, for having completed fifty years of public service in the diplomatic career.
Macedo Soares is a retired career diplomat and has extensive experience in the field of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. Between 2008 and 2011, he was Brazil's permanent representative at the Geneva-based Conference on Disarmament.
Since his election in 2014, he has served as Secretary General of the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL) and was re-elected by acclamation on February 14, 2017, during the XXV Session of the Conference General of the Organization.
The Award Medal was established by Decree 51.061, of 1961, and is awarded by the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil to public servants who have provided relevant services. It is an official recognition of the country to those who distinguish themselves in their services, leaving an example of devotion.
