Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade Award
The Award Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade of Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation of OPANAL seeks to recognize and encourage the importance of promoting academic contributions to the field of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation by authors from the Latin American and Caribbean region.
• Nationals of the 33 States Party to the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (Treaty of Tlatelolco) and which in turn are Member States of OPANAL.
• Theses of any degree, academic or popular articles, books and similar research texts focused on the field of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation may be submitted to the competition, with a preferred emphasis on the role of nuclear weapon-free zones. .
• Texts may be presented in any of the official languages of the General Conference; Spanish, French, English or Portuguese.
• The documents submitted to the contest must be original authorship and prepared by a maximum of up to two people in which case, one or both must be nationals of a Member State of OPANAL.
• The texts submitted to the contest must be accompanied by the following documentation:
- Information about the author(s): academic history, resume or other relevant publications.
- Summary of the document of a maximum of up to 3000 words. The papers should be sent to the OPANAL Secretariat by email to [email protected]
• The jury will evaluate the works anonymously and will be consist of the following members:
- El Secretary General of OPANAL
- The Representative accredited to the OPANAL of each of the five Member States of the Council in accordance with its composition at the time of publication of the Call.

• Only those documents that comply with all the requirements stipulated by this Call for Proposals will be evaluated considering:
- Relevance
- Originality
- Methodology
- Conclusions
• On February 14, 2025, on the anniversary of the opening for signing of the Treaty of Tlatelolco, an awards ceremony will be held, presenting recognition to the winner(s) of the Prize.
• The winning person or persons will be invited by the OPANAL Council to present their work.
• The deadline for submitting documents will be 15th October 2024.
