Uruguay chairs the 316th Council Meeting

Hon. Mr. Jorge Alberto Delgado Fernández (President of the 316th Meeting of the Council of OPANAL and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay in Mexico) and Ambassador Luiz Filipe de Macedo Soares (Secretary General of OPANAL)

The Hon. Mr. Jorge Alberto Delgado Fernández, Permanent Representative of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay to OPANAL and Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Mexico, chaired the 316th Meeting of the OPANAL Council, which took place on September 20, 2018 at the Agency's headquarters.

During the opening of the 316th Council Meeting, Ambassador Delgado Fernández mentioned:

After 23 years, Uruguay returns to chair the OPANAL Council. For us it is an honor and we thank all the Member States for giving us the confidence to be able to preside over it in the coming years.

Ambassador Delgado Fernández also served as President of the XXIV Ordinary Session of the General Conference of OPANAL, held on November 26, 2015 in Mexico City.

The Eastern Republic of Uruguay signed the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (Treaty of Tlatelolco) on February 14, 1967 and ratified it on August 20, 1968, thus being one of the founding Members. of OPANAL and an active Member of the Organization.

Among others, the 316th Meeting of the Council considered topics such as: the XXVI Extraordinary Session of the General Conference of OPANAL, to be held on November 15, 2018; the participation of Secretary General of the Agency, Amb. Luiz Filipe de Macedo Soares, at the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly and the upcoming commemoration of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (September 26, 2018).
