Visit by Dr. Antônio Cançado Trinidade, Judge of the International Court of Justice

 

Representatives of OPANAL Member States and the Secretary-General welcomed Dr. Antônio Cançado Trinidade at OPANAL headquarters. 

 

On Tuesday, February 13rd, 2018, a special meeting of OPANAL Council (currently composed of Argentina, Brazil, Guatemala, Peru and Uruguay) was held on the occasion of the visit by Dr. Antônio Augusto Cançado Trinidade, Judge of the Court International of Justice.

The Members of the Council and other Member States of OPANAL heard from Judge Cançado Trinidade the judicial process undertaken by the Marshall Islands against the nuclear-weapon States due to their non-compliance with the obligation of nuclear disarmament established in Article VI of the Treaty on the Non-Nuclear Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

Judge Cançado Trinidade, former president of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, published in 2017 a book entitled "The Universal Obligation of Nuclear Disarmament" which contains his dissenting vote in the International Court of Justice on the case submitted to the Court in 2014 by the the Marshall Islands.
